Hello fellow boat fanatics,
Ive got a 21ft maxum bowrider with V8 I/O, need to know what size and length of chain would be best for the standard danforth anchor…Ive got plenty of rope and a shackle to attach to the chain
oh yeah,
i use this boat with my family, on freshwater lakes in northern idaho & eastern washington..some wind and typical summer-time conditions

4 feet at least, 5 or 6 would be better.
1/4″ would be adequate.
jtexas is right when he says that 1/4 inch guage chain is ok. You would probably be perfectly fine with the length of chain he suggests too.
Given that you have plenty of rope, then depths won’t be too much of an issue when it comes to letting out scope. All you want is enough heavy chain to ensure that the pull on your danforth anchor is along the sea bed rather than upwards.
Personally, I’d have at least 5 metres of 1/4″ chain for what you are doing.
You don’t mention what the sea bed is, but may I also suggest that you rig a tripping line to your danforth if the seabed is mud or soft sand? Danforths are very difficult to recover from such stuff.
Good luck, have fun.
i have a 1/4 chain and the length is 6 feet
but i boat by sandy hook nj and always had a problem setting anchor, but now that i increased the length problem solve
so the longer the better but 4 feet should do
but go with the 1/4 chain and minimum 4 feet
In my boaters and seamans class they told us for every 1 ft, of water you should have 7 ft, of rope with 3to4 ft, of chain on your anchor. Hope this helped you
The chain should be equal to the length of the boat.
jtexas is right, sometimes the simple answer is best. Happy boating.
